April-May 2019: Taralets for Toilets: Community-Led Toilet Sanitation and Distribution of Toilet Bowls

To attain the goal of 100% coverage of households with sanitary toilet facilities, one has to mobilize the available resources. Equipping the community people with knowledge, and changing their behavior on environmental sanitation, are considered to be the root cause of this problem.

Last April, 2019, Team Venus was able to procure the 20 toilet bowls requested from the Sanitary Inspector for the residents of the barangay.   Traditional sanitation program which includes distribution of toilet bowls, only resolves the immediate problem but not the root cause. A community-empowering approach was conducted through Community-Led Total Sanitation on the same month, which targets behavioral change and is a helpful tool for the group to address this major issue. The team also considers Community-Led Total Sanitation as an effective and practical means of bring change in the family’s behavior. Through CLTS, the residents had the initiative to find the means in constructing their own toilet facility and for the community to achieve Zero Open Defecation.
