January-March 2019: Hypertension Day

On the 14th day of February, 2019 the hypertensive individuals came together for an assembly. The purpose of the assembly was to refresh the hypertensive individuals regarding their knowledge on hypertension and to improve their medication adherence. Before the program proper, Blood Pressure Check-ups were done along with the registration of the hypertensive individuals. This was then followed by a prayer and national anthem.

A zumba session was then held especially for the Hypertensives [(FINALLY!!) as only a few of the hypertensive individuals actually participate during the thrice a week Zumba held every week. After warming up their bodies, its now time to fill their brains with facts regarding Hypertension: its nature, risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, emergency measures, prevention and control. A short video on hypertension was shown as a supplement to the lecture. In assessing their knowledge a pre- and post test questionnaire was administered. It was noted that there was an increased number of respondents with a passing score in the pre-test and post-test done before and after the lecture on hypertension respectively. From 48 (75%) to 52 (81%) out of 64 respondents. Morisky Medication Adherence Questionnaire was also administered in order to gauge the hypertensives’ compliance to their medications. Results showed that 5/64 (39%) scored low, 19/64 (30%)scored medium, and 14/64 (20%) scored high. A Kapushow Hypertension quiz bowl was given after where one representative per purok joined. The topics included were pretty much the same as the ones in the knowledge questionnaire. In the end, the representative from Purok Mars joined.

More than the improved knowledge and adherence scores is that, these hypertensive individuals are holding on to the Blood Pressure Monitoring booklets that we have made two years ago. Most of them carry their booklet whenever they go the Health Centre to let their Blood Pressure check. As a result, we awarded individuals who had the most number and who lets their blood pressure check regularly. After which, we distributed the medication reminder booklets also known as Booklet sa Paghinumdum sa Tambal to aid patients in remembering their medications.. The Booklets contains information regarding the antihypertensive medications, medication reminders, a calendar where to mark whether individuals remember to take their medication for the day, medication sleeve where their medications can be stored. Along with the distribution of the Booklets was the dispensing of the antihypertensive medications which was sponsored by the Health Centre.
