Global warming has become a threat to all mankind. It is now one of the primary concerns of our civilized world. We have to admit that we are great contributor in the rapid increase of temperature in our environment. And we must be aware of the cause and effects of such.
Trees and other plants help in reducing heat in our surroundings. It removes harmful chemicals from the soul and reduced greenhouse gases, as it absorbed carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. These trees hold tons of water during rainy days to avoid floods and soil erosion in our cities and municipalities.. The trees around us are extremely important and gave always been necessary for improving human conditions.
Luckily, Arbor day is celebrated all around the world yearly. Its aim is to increase the number of planted trees in order to combat global warming and promote a healthier ecosystem.
In connection with this, last December 11, 2018, Team Venus with other student doctors from Barangay Bajo were invited to a tree planting activity sponsored by the Local Government Unit. The activity was held at Barangay Don Eleno, Sergio OsmeƱa which served as an opening activity for a health education campaign for out of school youths headed by the Municipal Health Unit staff. The seedlings were provided by the Municipal Agriculture, more than 300 seedlings were given.
Together with the MHU staff, out of school youth participants and barangay officials of Don Eleno, we braved the steep and slippery mountainous area of our tree planting location. We hiked for almost an hour from our vantage point. It was kind of exhausting because we did not expect that the location of our tree planting activity will be that far. However, our sweat and leg pain were all worth it because of the majestic view from the top of the mountain. It was an amazing experience. It was very fruitful and successful activity.
Planting a tree may just be a tiny piece of puzzle in the solution of the global warming problem but I am sure that with this small gesture it will create big miracles in the future. Tree is life.
