Pahina: Healthier Food, Healthier Neighboorhood

Community gardens are outdoor plots of land where group of citizen work regularly to propagate agricultural produce for personal or public consumption. Increasingly used by municipal bodies and community organizations to stimulate economic development and build community pride.

“Pahina” is a community gardening activity in Brgy. Venus, Sergio Osmena. This activity is a fantastic way not only to grow fresh produce, but for the people of community to create social bonding. The gardens are run solely by hardworking residents who are dedicated to providing the community with completely natural produce. During the activity, people of different puroks gather together in the garden located near Venus Elementary School. They dig, pull pesky weeds together and plant different kinds of vegetables and crops. While watching getting their hands dirty, can’t help but smile because as they dig and sweat, their souls radiate. People of different puroks had smiles over soil, “bolos” and great conversations. When asked about what good do this activity give them, one answered “Maayu bayah ni para sa tanan”. I know it may sound so general, but if we want “Health for All”, then I guess gardening for all is not bad, right? There’s nothing good than watching your hard work flourishes into edible, take-home fruit and veg and creating social ties at the same time.

You may have heard of “Dirty hands are sign of clean money” but not only that, indeed “Dirty hands are sign of healthier food and healthier neighborhood. Community gardening really helps build stronger communities.
