December 7, 2016, a small talk on the mechanism of fecal-oral transmission was
discussed by the medical students assigned at Barangay Venus, Sergio Osmena.
The talk is part of the Oplan Pansayan Edcuational Program which caters to both
schoolchildren and adults.
The group introduced the “f” diagram which they adapted from a concept created by Lougborough University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering. The diagram summarized the pathways in which fecal matter can be ingested by humans and further contaminate others. It became a very good source of information to the residents of Barangay Venus since the diagram is very visual and uses terms and examples that really fit the community’s situation. It also showed different pathways in which concepts of WASH are needed to stop fecal-oral transmission. Since WASH has been integrated to the introduction of the diagram, the group also decided to demonstrate handwashing techniques based on the World Health Organization’s steps. The demonstration activity also caught the attention of the adult residents since this was already introduced at the barangay’s elementary school.

Along with the group’s Oplan
Pansayan program, the presentation of the “f” diagram was introduced to
emphasize the importance of the barangay
health team’s effort in monitoring households with sanitary toilet
facilities.
The small talk may only
be the beginning for upcoming bigger steps in achieving sanitation for the
barangay.
