April - May 2019: Mental Health Caregiver Support Group

When you face a problem in life, the first people to whom you turn are often friends and family members. But sometimes people in your life may struggle to relate. So often it can prove beneficial to sit and talk with other people who are dealing with the same kinds of issues.

Support groups work by sharing of stories and information about their emotions, thoughts and behaviour because it reminds people that they are not alone and that others have persevered and even flourished despite challenging times.

The medical students in Barangay Venus hosted the “Mental health caregiver support group” last April 2019. The activity mainly consisted of health education conducted by Nihma Hadjiula on basic psychiatric diseases; its signs and symptoms, and management. The group also flashed videos regarding mental health, to boost the morale of caregivers facing the same challenges and overcoming odds just to take care of their mentally ill loved-ones. This support group continues to be promoted by the Medical student in pursuit of fighting against misbelief on mental health.
